How to make your first billion–with free software

The problem with a 100 percent open-source model is that it’s tough to scale, as Cote points out, in part because it doesn’t convert enough users into customers. In an effort to maintain open-source virtue and scale at the same time, such a model pushes vendors into awkward positions, vis-a-vis their communities, that a little proprietary software actually erases.

That’s why I’ve argued for a phased approach to open-source licensing, one that allows for different

CEOs, other execs disagree on security

(Credit: Ounce Labs)

Among CEOs, 93 percent are confident in their organization’s ability to identify and thwart security breaches. And 48 percent said they believe their organizations are rarely attacked.

To gather the data, Ponemon Institute questioned 30 CEOs and 183 other top-level executives who report to CEOs, including chief operating officers, division presidents, and chief information officers, over a six-month period ending in June.

Gelato brings real-time search to online dating

And, he added, it means that users can search for a more broad range of criteria, given that Gelato can look for matches based on search terms on all the various social networking sites that members use. So, finding “women who are 30 to 40, who are nonsmokers, who are politically liberal and who recently mentioned Burning Man, USC football, or World of Warcraft” might actually bear fruit, Odom explained.

Using software updates to spread malware

LAS VEGAS–Two researchers from Israeli security firm Radware have figured out a way to trick computers into downloading malware or take over a computer by hijacking the communications during the update process for Skype and other applications.

Study Twitter is 40 percent ‘pointless babble’

Pear Analytics published its investigation, which was conducted through a series of random samplings from the Twitter public timeline, into the different species of tweets on Wednesday. That means that only public tweets were indexed; the numbers could be different if friends-only accounts were taken into consideration as well. (Obviously, that would be much tougher to analyze.)

That might be a bit of a buzzkill for Twitter’s team, which is pretty vocal about wanting the s

Twilight time for Yahoo search

This kind of confusion is understandable in the early days of any significant merger. It might take years for the Microsoft-Yahoo search deal to wind its way through lawyers and regulators. Indeed, Davtchev said, “for the next year, it should be business as usual” for Yahoo Search.

While that might be true regarding the public face of Yahoo search, it’s clear that a tectonic shift is taking place in the search industry. It’s hard to imagine that should the deal pass government scru

America’s first Internet addiction detox program

Here’s criterion No. 4: “Use of Internet in spite of its harmful effects; despite knowledge of harmful effects, Internet use is hard to stop.”

His schoolwork began to suffer, and his parents checked him into the center. Now he looks after the goats and chickens, and goes cross-country running. He said he knows that the Web will still be a part of his life but that he feels the center has given him a new balance.

Indeed, there is much concern generally about gamers’ he
